Why Should
Why Should My Child Read This Book?

This historical fiction novel uses masterful storytelling a to create a virtuous protagonist whose flaws also make him relatable and infinitely likable. His life on the high seas during the wars between England and Napoleon’s France expose the reader to violence and combat in the realm of real-life warfare as opposed to the contextless, gory violence of video games that often occupy the minds of young boys today.

Readers will learn the mechanics and artistry of ship design and absorb the rich historical context of the time period, especially the Battle of Trafalgar, one of history’s pivotal naval conflicts. It’s clear the author has engaged in meticulous research to bring the time period and the protagonist’s adventures as a naval officer to life.

The protagonist is courageous even in moments of fear, disciplined, and unfailingly polite. He values honesty and takes seriously his duty to protect women and children, as well as the soldiers under his command—a true model of manhood. What sets his character apart is his intellectual curiosity. Time and again, he demonstrates the superiority of strategies grounded in intelligence, ingenuity, and intensive planning over brute force or conventional battle tactics. He exemplifies true wisdom in both the battleground and in his relationship with others.

How can I use
How Can I Use This Book?
  • Mr. Quinn publicly criticizes his superior officer’s decisions and has to suffer the consequences (p. 28). Later he realizes his decision was unwise, and he would have been better off controlling his tongue (p. 31). Have you ever said something that you later regretted? Think of a real-life scenario in which silence is the better course.
  • Two prisoners of war disguise themselves in clothes of the opposite gender as part of a prison escape attempt. We have many stories in history of admirable people who acted in a similar manner out of necessity. However, parents should be aware that this content may be taken out of context by a child, especially one who is exposed to the forceful promotion of the non-binary view of gender in modern Western popular culture. (p. 130-145)
