Mindful Muslim Review

This book earns our Gold Star for its vivid portrayal of the all-too-human weakness of jealousy and the beauty and strength of will with which the protagonist overcomes it. Taran is desperately jealous of Prince Rhun, the proposed husband for Princess Eilonwy. Yet, at the king’s request, he pledges to protect, assist and mentor Rhun and does so with ihsan (beauty and excellence) and at the risk of his own life. As Prince Rhun grows in maturity, Taran displays exemplary leadership, putting aside his jealousy to appreciate Rhun’s actions and growth.

The second major theme of the book is the companions willingness to sacrifice to help others. Each companion, at different occasions, is willing to die, whether in battle or in a hostage exchange, to save the life of a friend.

In the end, Eilonwy’s generosity and the sacrifice of her inheritance and her magical abilities to prevent evil brings about their salvation.
