Why Should My Child Read This Book?
While the kid-lit world has been inundated with Ramadan books of late, this one stands out for its nuanced and accurate representation of Muslim practices in this special month. Muslim children will recognize themselves in this story. A sweet book with stunning illustrations, the moonsighting narrative will feel familiar to anyone who has celebrated this sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ before the start of this blessed month. We were happy to see fasting described as an act of obedience to our Creator (rather than the tired trope of fasting “to feel sympathy with the poor”). Even small details showing the mother wearing hijab outdoors but not inside her own home reveal that the author and illustrator are keenly aware of Muslim practices. The illustrations are so beautiful, children will be asking to read the book again and again.
