Why Should My Child Read This Book?
This superbly crafted memoir is a poignant story that firmly establishes an anti-victimhood mentality for those who are fighting against oppression and injustice. The main character exemplifies immense personal growth, shows grace and gratitude in his personal relationships, and illustrates through example how to improve his community. This book earns our Gold Star and should be read by every Muslim teen.
The protagonist is wrongfully accused of heinous crimes and is convicted and imprisoned at age 16. He draws inspiration from the story of the Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him, to survive and grow stronger, strengthen his faith, cultivate his knowledge of Islam, and develop his moral character. He reminds us, with grace and sincerity, that every difficulty comes from Allah ﷻ and is for a purpose. He details strategies for dealing with difficulty based on his experience.
He shows impeccable adab (manners and good character) with the people around him, expressing gratitude to anyone who helped him at any point in life. He tries to see the good in everyone, and if he can’t praise them, he remains silent.
Using his community as an example, he encourages everyone to do whatever they can, even if seemingly small, to right wrongs, correct injustices, and remove oppression.
