VIEW FLAGS
Mindful Muslim Review

This book cleverly illustrates the trappings of people-pleasing. Camilla turns into a chameleon of sorts when she comes down with the ‘stripes’ and her outward appearance becomes dictated by the words of those around her. A lesson for all to not give up on that which is good (in this case eating lima beans) to appease the masses. A great conversation starter about holding on to truth (what is good) even at the risk of ridicule.

Teaching Tools
  • What happened to Camilla when she refused to eat the lima beans? She gave up on what she knew was good for her.
  • Why did Camilla keep changing? She became a puppet to people’s opinions.
  • What happened when Camilla finally ate the lima beans? She reclaimed ownership over who she was.
  • Share the story of Prophet Nuh, peace be upon him, how he kept building the ark even though people ridiculed him. We live in a time when Islam is like the ‘ark in the desert’ and being Muslim can look to others like ‘eating lima beans.’
